Musician Insight
“I was teaching a [Newark Early Strings Program] class the day before the Hitchcock program. I was telling the students about the concert and explained how the stage would look with a big screen. I asked them to raise their hands if they had ever seen a scary movie, and then I asked, ‘Can you imagine that movie without music?’ We talked about how you can always communicate emotions through music, how music is the universal language. And going into the concert, it was a great reminder of how important music is to conveying that emotional part of ourselves.
“During the concert, I couldn’t see the movies myself, but through the music, I could tell what the clips were and what they were trying to communicate. For the audience walking in and seeing the projection screen, I’d imagine they saw the program as more of a visual experience. But with the orchestra on stage, I was hoping that the audience would feel that it was just as much an aural experience.” |
